Scammers try to dupe Companies House users

Companies House has warned businesses to ignore emails from a scammer operating as which is trying to dupe directors into verifying their online identity

The scam email is sent from a fake email address and tagged as being sent from Companies House Info Alert. It has hijacked the Companies House logo and asks recipients to ‘identify’ themselves online, threatening that they ‘will no longer be able to use the services of Companies House as of September 23. You need the reference number from this email for identification’.

The email also said that recipients had to use the reference number within 24 hours or it would expire.

Companies House warned: ‘Do not reply to the email, or open any attachments or click on any links. Delete the email from your inbox, including your deleted items.’

There is also a warning about scam telephone calls asking for late payment penalties, which are obviously worrying as the annual accounts filing deadline approaches on 30 September.

Companies have been contacted asking for payment of a late filing penalty over the telephone. The caller says they will accept a payment of £5 by credit or debit to place a hold on any further action being taken.

Companies House warned: ‘We will not contact you for immediate payment of a late filing penalty or request payment of a nominal fee to place a hold on any recovery action.

‘Payment plans are set up with the agreement of the manager dealing with your late filing penalty query. We will not cold call you to take a payment.’
